Mark Thawley, ASLA
Since joining Kyle Phillips Golf Course Design in 2000, design associate Mark Thawley has assisted in the design of golf courses across the globe including: Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the United Kingdom. He has also played a key role in various design projects in the United States including the complete renovations of Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Menlo Country Club in Woodside, Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles and the Championship Course at Incline Village in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
Prior to joining Phillips, Mark completed his Masters of Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona, which included an independent study abroad of the classic links and heathland courses of the United Kingdom. His thesis, “Evaluating Established Golf Courses-Restoration, Renovation, and Redesign,” focused on the importance of restoring the old-fashioned character and unique design features found on many of the early American courses.
Mark has applied his understanding of classic architecture and its sensitive restoration to many of our projects, in particular the restoration of Alister Mackenzie’s design work at the California Golf Club of San Francisco and Norman Macbeth’s original design of the Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles. While in school Mark also gained hands on construction experience through projects such as The Gallery Golf Club (Tucson, AZ) and The Kingsley Club (Kingsley, MI).
